Wedge prisms are used to deflect a light beam by a small angle. They can be used to isolate different physical environments and deflect the back reflection to a different direction.
A wedge prism is an optical element with plane surfaces inclined at a small wedge angle. When a collimated beam passes through, it is deviated toward the base of the wedge by a deviation angle determined by the wedge angle and the refractive index of the substrate.
Wedge prisms are widely used for beam steering, beam displacement, and optical alignment. A single wedge provides fixed beam deviation, while a pair of rotatable wedges — known as a Risley prism pair — enables continuous, 2D beam steering by relative rotation. They are available in various materials such as N-BK7, UV fused silica, and CaF2, with round or square apertures and AR coatings for different wavelength ranges.
Our wedge prisms, also called optical wedges, feature a precise wedge angle from 0.5° to 5° with deviation accuracy up to arcminutes. Made from high-quality N-BK7 or fused silica with λ/10 surface flatness and broadband AR coating, they offer high transmission and low wavefront distortion for laser beam steering, interferometry, and imaging applications. Custom wedge angles, sizes, and Risley prism assemblies are available upon request.
